Director of Student Ministries

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

This position is responsible for engaging in authentic relationships with students and their families, equipping students and young adults in their faith journey through training and programming, and empowering them to spread God’s word and make disciples.

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                 

 

Programming

  • Works cooperatively with clergy, ministry area directors and appropriate lay leaders to ensure that student and young adult ministry opportunities support and strengthen the congregational purpose, strategic pathways and goals.
  • Responsible for the design of a variety of programs for students and young adults, including Confirmation, Sunday School, Retreats and Workshops, Camps and mid-week programs, utilizing internal and external resources.
  • In coordination with the Director of the Wesley Memorial School and Director of Children and Family Ministries, ensures that workshops and educational opportunities are available for parents, grandparents and caregivers.
  • Responsible for the delivery of those programs utilizing well-trained interns and volunteers. 
  • Serves as the liaison between the church ministerial staff and leaders of outside programming for students and young adults, such as the Boy Scouts.
  • Maintains up-to-date rosters and attendance figures for events and programs.
  • Ensures compliance with Safe Sanctuaries policies for all activities.

 

 

Leadership

  • Recruits lay volunteers to support student and young adult programming.
  • Provides direction and guidance to ministerial interns assigned to student and young adult programming along with lay volunteers who assist with the programs.
  • Responsible for the financial management of assigned programming including the budgeting process, expense management, as well as expense reporting to the designated church financial manager.
  • Maintains contact with students and young adults attending schools, colleges and universities or other corporate training or internships, advising them of campus ministries and other opportunities where they are and offering opportunities to reconnect when they are back in the area.
  • Excites parents to include their students in church programming using a variety of communication methods.
  • Excites students and young adults to participate in church programming using a variety of communication methods.
  • Ensures that the broader community is aware of opportunities utilizing a variety of communication and marketing channels.
  • Comes alongside and encourages students in their extracurricular activities outside of church events.

 

Other

  • The Director will be the primary staff liaison to the Student Ministries Team. 
  • The Director will attend meetings of the Church Council and Staff and other meetings as assigned.
  • Other duties may be assigned by the Senior Pastor and/or the Staff Parrish Relations Team.

 

   

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Demonstrated commitment to the Christian faith and serving God through the faith formation of students and young adults, as well as an acceptance of the doctrine and policy of the United Methodist Church.
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent in Education/Christian Ministry or related field. Masters preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of significant, successful experience in developing Student Ministry programs in medium or large congregations.
  • Working knowledge of theory and techniques required to manage and maintain a vital student and young adult ministry in a large congregation.
  • Demonstrated experience recruiting, developing and leading volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience with basic financial management of programming and events.

Direct supervision of ministerial interns.
