Missions Announcements

Dear Congregation,

The aftermath of Hurricane Helene afforded our congregation the opportunity to assist our neighbors with their immediate basic needs in Weaverville by providing food, clothing and generators as well as Asheville and Burnsville with homeless care kits. We continued our assistance when needs changed in WNC from basic food and clothing to warding off the cold by financing propane in Newland and Elk Park. Through your generosity we've been able to help in the rebuilding of Camp Linn Haven's cabins and facilities in Linville as well as enabling a first responder and his family to get back into their home in Elk Park after major flood damage.

Just as our recent hands-on ministry with "Rise Against Hunger" gave us the opportunity to fill meal bags for the Phillipines and this past Saturday's "Merge" event with our local missions, we now have the opportunity to serve our western North Carolina friends by making a trip there to be HIS HANDS and FEET and to serve them personally. As mentioned briefly in recent newsletters, we will be participating alongside folks from the Roanoke Rapids area and specifically the Seaboard Lions Club (who last Thanksgiving sent 200 volunteers and served 5,000 meals to the Newland/Elk Park area of Avery County). This Easter, we hope you'll feel led to spend part of your weekend there (and we can still enjoy Easter Sunday at home!)

Here is a tentative schedule for the weekend:

Good Friday (April 18th)

Between 12:00 pm & 3:00 pm: Lead volunteers meet to see what can be set up then @ Cranberry Middle School and the Ag Center in Newland (weather permitting)

4:00 pm - 6:00 pm: Private mental health sessions will be conducted @ Cranberry Middle School

***Tentative: Possible meal for volunteers after 6:00 pm @ the Elk Park Inn.

Saturday (April 19th)

7:00 am - 10:00 am: Final set-up for Easter egg hunt/games@ Cranberry Middle School (Will be advertised for all of Avery County)

9:00 am - 3:00 pm: Volunteers needed to assist in manning check-in desk for those seeking mental health sessions @ Cranberry Middle School

10:00 am - 1:00 pm: Photos with Easter Bunny, popcorn, cotton candy, free pizza for kids @ Cranberry Middle School

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm: Easter egg hunt (Volunteers needed to oversee and clean-up. Afterward, will go to Ag Center in Newland).

10:00 am - 4:00 pm: While Easter egg hunt is taking place @ Cranberry Middle School, other volunteers will be @ Ag Center in Newland prepping for community dinner and assisting in setting up for entertainment/games

4:00 pm - Until.....Entertainment begins @ the Ag Center with bands and individual vocalists; dinner served and volunteers begin delivering to rest homes and shut-ins

Easter Sunday (April 20th)

Sunrise Service (@ this time) will be at Veterans' Park in Newland

If this sounds like something you may feel led to participate in, here is some basic and general information you will need to know and the planned schedule for what is taking place between Elk Park and Newland, NC for this Easter weekend.

1) First, you will NOT be required to sign a waiver. (However, it is our desire to maintain a list of volunteers who are committed to going to be able to communicate and update as we get closer to the Easter weekend). For the present, you may text or call Ken Gulledge @ 336-442-1741 or the church office at 336-884-2204.

2) There is no age limit as long as there is an accompanying responsible adult.

3) There will be volunteer opportunities Friday afternoon through Saturday night if you wish to participate. (Note: Most opportunities will be Saturday between 8:00 am and 7:00 pm).

4) At present, the most likely gathering and sign-in site will be at the Cranberry Middle School located at 6230 N. US Hwy. 19E., Elk Park, NC.

5) At present, lead volunteers will meet after lunch to see what can be done Friday afternoon regarding set-up @ the middle school and the Ag Center in Newland (weather permitting).

2024 Missions Update

Our Commitment to the community

The Missions team has decided to split our monthly Communion Sunday food collection between Open Door Ministries and Macedonia Family Resource Center. Both of these organizations are an integral part in fighting hunger in the High Point area. Macedonia received food donations from the postal drive in April but have already depleted their pantry as more families are requesting food. Many of these family units are becoming multigeneration because of the rising rent cost and the cost of living. Open Door Ministries provides critical services in our community for individuals and families experiencing homelessness and/or food insecurity. Wesley Memorial has been associated with this ministry for many years by providing both financial aid and volunteers. To help offset this increased demand for Food Pantry items, a collection of nonperishables is taken up each month on Communion Sunday.

Sunday, May 4, 2025 will be our next collection going to Open Door Ministries.

Sunday, June 1, 2025 will be our next collection going to Macedonia Family Resource Center.

Bins will be placed outside of all three services for your deposits. Please bring items as you're able, knowing your kindness helps our neighbors in need. Thank you for your generosity.
