2024 Summer studies

Monday Morning Studies

10:30 am, Media Center

July 1, 8, 15, 29, Aug. 5, and 12 will be a Study of the Psalms (led by Susannah Pittman).

For millennia, the Psalms have been at the heart of the worship, songs, and prayers of the people of God—in fact, the Psalms have often been referred to as the “Prayerbook” or the “Hymnbook” of the Bible. In this 6-week study, we’ll explore the various genres of psalms and how these psalms shape our worship and devotional practices.

Wednesday Studies

June 5 – August 14, 9:30 am, Dining Hall & 6:45 pm, Media Center

This study will be taught by Jeff Patterson and will focus on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis.

The Silver Chair is a fantasy that children enjoy but that enrich the spiritual lives of Christians. In this chronicle, two children, Polly and Eustace, are sent on a journey to Narnia to rescue their friend, Prince Rilian, who has been captured by the Lady of the Green Kirtle who rules the Underland. Puddleglum, one of Lewis’s most memorable characters, accompany Polly and Eustace on their quest. Throughout the course, we’ll be connecting the thought of Lewis to the Bible. Please read the first two chapters for the first class.

To register for any of these spiritual formation experiences, either call (336-884-2204) or email (receptionist@wesleymemorial.org) the church.

Wesley Memorial Historical Museum Opening and Hymn Sing

Since the sanctuary wing of our building was constructed in 1968, there has been a commitment to the presentation of the rich and important history of our church. That commitment has reached a new level in 2024 as your Historical Committee has redesigned the former “History Room” into a new, modern, and expanded Historical Museum.

We invite you to the Wesley Memorial Historical Museum Opening and Hymn Sing on August 17th where the congregation will be able to experience our church history on a level that far exceeds previous offerings. Its doors will open from 4 pm – 5pm, followed by a Hymn Sing in which the congregation will be able to enjoy the new hymnals (the museum will remain open immediately following). Come to the museum, which now connects the sanctuary to the adult Sunday School wing and enjoy over 200 framed photos, a timeline about our church from 1856 to the present, and display cases containing items and artifacts never before displayed! (Childcare provided for ages 0-3)

Senior Adult Outing to Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theater

The Senior Adults have a wonderful outing planned for August 22 to the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre in Wytheville, Va. It will take about 2 hours to get there via church bus.  The matinee play that we will see will be "Motown Sound".  Move and groove through the hits of Motown from Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Drifters, the Jackson 5, the Supremes and more! Join the fun for a non-stop party with some of the best music ever produced.

The group will board the church buses at 9:00am on the 22nd and head to Wytheville with a bathroom break. After arriving at the theatre, the group will get checked in and seated. A delicious meal will be served at Noon. The show begins at 1:30pm.

The cost of the event will be $59.99 a person. That covers the show, lunch, tax and gratuity. Please register at the front desk with your check for $59.99 made payable to Wesley Memorial with Senior Adult outing in the memo line. The seats were reserved early because they fill up fast. The group should be back at the church around 6:00pm. Take a wrap with you because it tends to get chilly in the theatre.

UPDATE: THIS EVENT HAS FILLED UP. YOU MAY CALL THE CHURCH TO ADD YOUR NAME TO THE WAITLIST.

Raising Awareness and Financial Support to Benefit

ALZHEIMER’S / DEMENTIA PATIENTS & THEIR CARE PARTNERS

The Senior Adult Council invites ALL FAMILIES of our church and community to participate in an OUTDOOR candlelight worship service of music and prayers. Upon arrival, attendees will receive candle votives in glass jars. This is a beautiful and heart-touching service. You will be invited to write names on paper flowers of your loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s now or long ago. Our pastors will pray over these names.  Currently, 1 in 3 Seniors age 65+ dies with Alzheimer’s or other dementia. By 2030, this number is expected to increase by 26%.

Thank you in advance for adding YOUR LIGHT to this crucial fight to end Alzheimer’s. Last year, our Wesley Memorial donations totaled $13,824.  We were recognized as the #1 fundraising “team” in Guilford County. All donations benefit The Alzheimer’s Association of Guilford County, given in a combined gift from Wesley Memorial. Our 2024 goal is to meet or exceed last year’s gift - - we can make a strong difference in furthering support of patients, their caregivers, and research.

Location ~ Dining Hall Patio. In case of rain, Service held in the Fellowship Hall

Reaching Out in Times of Need

In times of challenge, we’re here to support one another. If you or a loved one have experienced a recent hospitalization or are facing a care concern, please contact our pastors. It's important to note that we are not automatically informed of hospitalizations, nor do we have access to hospitalization records. Therefore, the only way we can extend our support is if you inform us directly. Please be assured that we deeply respect your privacy and will not disclose any information about your situation without your explicit permission. Your trust and confidentiality are important to us. We're here to provide comfort and assistance in any way possible because your well-being matters greatly to us.

2024 Missions Update

Our Commitment to Open Door Ministries

The Missions team has decided to split our monthly Communion Sunday food collection between Open Door Ministries and Macedonia Family Resource Center. Both of these organizations are an integral part in fighting hunger in the High Point area. Macedonia received food donations from the postal drive in April but have already depleted their pantry as more families are requesting food. Many of these family units are becoming multigeneration because of the rising rent cost and the cost of living. Open Door Ministries provides critical services in our community for individuals and families experiencing homelessness and/or food insecurity. Wesley Memorial has been associated with this ministry for many years by providing both financial aid and volunteers. To help offset this increased demand for Food Pantry items, a collection of nonperishables is taken up each month on Communion Sunday.

Sunday, August 4th will be our next collection going to Open Door Ministries.

Sunday, September 1st will be our next collection going to Macedonia Family Resource Center.

Bins will be placed outside of all three services for your deposits. Please bring items as you're able, knowing your kindness helps our neighbors in need. Thank you for your generosity.
